One-to-one banjo Tuition

Ed playing banjo in Sharp’s bar at Cecil Sharp House in Camden

I’ve been teaching individual lessons on 5-string banjo for over ten years and between one-on-one lessons and group classes have taught literally hundred of people to play the banjo.

Playing the 5-string banjo is a great fun and it’s an accessible instrument to start playing music on. I have developed a vast library of teaching resources and am very proud of having built up a well structured flexible syllabus that can help anyone progress from having never played music before to happily picking their banjo in the sunshine.

I specialise in teaching the clawhammer or frailing style of banjo that is traditional played in the southern states (Appalachia) but also play many tunes from England, Ireland, Wales, Scotland as well as jazz and klezmer.  I’m also happy to instruct students in bluegrass, classical banjo and plectrum banjo. I can also help you with getting a practical knowledge of music theory as well.

I teach privately from my home in London and online using Zoom.
